Propeller Shaft

Hitachi Automotive Systems Americas, Inc.'s propeller shaft was successfully put into full production by switching equipment control from hydraulics to a numerical controlled (NC) servo. Amid demand for improving vehicle fuel efficiency, a newly developed propeller shaft has been made considerably lighter than its predecessors by using aluminum in place of steel. A propeller shaft transmits engine torque to the rear wheels and therefore needs to be strong and reliable. Hitachi Automotive Systems Americas, Inc. developed two types of propeller shafts using alternative materials: Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) Propeller Shaft & Aluminum Propeller Shaft. They are part of Drive Train products.

Aim

  • Produce high strength, light weight Propeller Shafts for the automotive market.

Benefit

  • Efficiency: Contribution to vehicle fuel efficiency improvement by mass reduction
  • Safety: Low collapse force for improved vehicle crash performance resulting from Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) Propeller Shaft

Application

  • CFRP Propeller Shaft: Applicable for RWD & AWD Passenger Car (Middle and Full size)
  • Aluminum Propeller Shaft: Light Truck

Outline & Features

  • CFRP Propeller Shaft
    Conventional Product: Steel Tube
    Proposal Product: CFRP Tube
Safety: Low collapse force for improved vehicle crash performance
    Eco-Friendly: Material mass reduction
    Comfort: Noise/Vibration improvement
Productivity: Elimination of center support fastening process at vehicle assembly
  • Aluminum Propeller Shaft
    Conventional Product: Steel Tube
    Proposal Product: Aluminum Tube
    Mass Reduction
    Welding Technology with Quality Reliability
    High Corrosion Durability
